GET A WATERCOLOR LOOK USING AN APP

Tips Tuesday.jpg

There is a saying amongst photographers that the best camera is the camera you have with you. So, what camera do you have with you most often? It is estimated that there are roughly 2 Billion smartphone users in the world and a projected 36% of the world’s population are/will be using a smartphone by 2018, so chances are good that the camera you have with you is your smartphone. If you are part of that projected 36% AND you also like watercolor paintings, have I got a tip for creating a watercolor look using an app on your phone.

THE APP

I am sure there are many other app that create a watercolor effect, but WATERLOGUE is the app that I have been using with my phone. You can find the details of the app in the iTunes Store listed in the Sources below, but I thought I would show you a few of my experiments using the app.

THE SEAFOOD

I took this photo in the seafood section of the grocery store. You can use the camera function within the app, or the camera on your phone like I did on this photo. The photo has not been enhanced at all. The image was then opened in the Waterlogue app and that is where the fun begins. As you can see in this example, the areas (eyes) that do not have a lot of contrast are not very detailed in the watercolor version. That is just something to keep in mind. So, here is the original photo and a version using the app:

ARCHITECTURE/INTERIOR

Want to see another? How about this waiting area? Again, it is the original and two different versions:

HAY BALES

And one more for the road. I took this one from the passenger window of a car speeding down the interstate (see the weeds by the road are all blurry). I love hay bales, but I am a bit like Goldilocks because I have been searching for just the right field…  so I take pictures in case I want to return to the field later. This image would normally be a candidate for the delete bin, but just look at how the unsightly utility pole is now tree-like in faux watercolor.
